The game of Caribbean poker has risen in popularity over the years and you will now find it available at several online casinos. If you know how to play American stud poker then you should find it fairly easy to pick up the rules of Caribbean poker.

When you play Caribbean poker at an online casino you need to be aware of the rankings for each particular hand. As you will see, the rules of Caribbean poker are not that difficult to learn and it is not a very demanding game in terms of strategy.

Caribbean poker rules

As with the different popular poker games such as Texas Hold’em, Five Card Draw and Omaha, each hand has a ranking. The lowest hand in Caribbean poker (as with the others) is a high card. For example, you may have one ace in your hand and nothing else.

A royal flush is the highest ranked hand in Caribbean poker where you have five cards in sequence all of the same suit (hearts, diamonds, clubs or spades). Here are the hands ranked from lowest to highest:

  • A hand with a high card such as an ace or king
  • A pair of the same value for example. two aces
  • Two different pairs (known as two pair) for example two aces and two nines
  • Three cards of the same value (known as three of a kind) for example three queens
  • A “straight” which is all five cards in sequence of different suits for example 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 of any suit
  • A “flush” which is five cards of the same suit that are not in sequence
  • A “full house” which is three of one value and a pair of another value for example three aces and two kings
  • Four cards of the same value (known as four of a kind) for example four aces
  • A “straight flush” for example 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 of the same suit
  • A “royal flush” which is the top cards ace, king, queen, jack and 10 of the same suit

You will play against the casino with Caribbean poker. There is a dealer which can be the computer or a live croupier and your objective is to beat the hand that they have. To start a game of Caribbean poker you will need to make an “ante” bet. Once all ante bets are placed then each player will receive 5 cards face down from the dealer.

The dealer will also deal themselves five cards and they will turn one of these “face up” so that all of the players can see it. Now you need to assess your hand and make a decision on what you are going to do.

There are only two decisions that you can make when playing Caribbean poker:

  1. Not to continue and “fold” your hand – when you do this you will lose your ante bet to the casino
  2. Continue to play and place a bet that is double your ante bet

When you have made your decision, the dealer will reveal their cards and if you have a superior hand to them then you will win. If the dealer’s hand is superior to yours then the casino will win and you lose your ante and double bet.

The payouts with Caribbean poker

If your hand is superior to that of the dealer you will immediately get a 1 to 1 return for your ante bet. To win with your “double bet” the dealer must have a hand that qualifies. This means that they must be holding at least an ace and a king in their hand. When this is the case, the following payouts will apply:

  • 2 to 1 for two pair
  • 3 to 1 for three of a kind
  • 4 to 1 for a straight
  • 5 to 1 for a flush
  • 7 to 1 for a full house
  • 20 to 1 for four of a kind
  • 50 to 1 for a straight flush
  • 100 to 1 for a royal flush

A lot of online casinos offer a progressive jackpot with Caribbean poker. Usually, you will need a royal flush to win the complete jackpot. In some cases, you can win 10% of a progressive jackpot if you have a straight flush.
