Roulette is a very popular casino game all over the world. A lot of people like to play American roulette. If you have never played American roulette before then we will explain the rules and other things here. You can have a lot of fun playing American roulette but it is important that you know what you are doing.

What is American roulette?

The wheel with American roulette is divided into 38 with the numbers 1 through 365 and also a 0 and a 00. Each of the different number segments are colored either red or black with the 0 and 00 in green.

To get the biggest wins from American roulette, you need to predict which number the ball will land on. You can place a bet on one or more numbers. When all bets are placed, the dealer will spin the roulette wheel in a specific direction and then will spin the ball in the opposite direction.

Once the ball has landed, players that bet on the right number will win. There are other bets that you can place with American roulette which we will discuss later on. As the wheel is divided up equally, the probability of the ball landing in any of the divisions is equal.

American roulette rules

Players of American roulette will use chips to bet with. If you are playing roulette at an online casino then you can exchange some of your casino balance for chips. Each player at the table will usually have a different colored chip to make identification easy.

A player will have a certain amount of time before the roulette wheel is spun to place their bets. They will place chips on the roulette table corresponding to the numbers they have chosen or other types of bets.

The dealer will make announcement that no more bets are allowed and then the wheel is spun followed by the ball. When the ball comes to rest the dealer will call the number and the color. If you have a winning bet then you will be paid.

American roulette bet types

It is possible for you to place bets on the numbers that you think the ball will land on as well as group bets. You can place a bet on a single number, a small group of numbers or adjacent numbers. On the outside of the roulette table are the group bets. These are called “outside” bets.

An inside bet (or “straight” bet) is one that you would place on one number which includes the 0 and 00. The payout you receive for correctly predicting a winning number is 35 to 1. These odds are generous because it is difficult to predict the exact number where the ball will land.

You can also place a “split” bet which involves two adjacent numbers. Your chip is placed between the two numbers such as 4 and 7 or 23 and 26 for example. If the ball lands in either of the numbers that you have a split bet on then you will get paid 17 to 1.

A “street” bet is where you place a bet on one of three different numbers landing. These must be numbers in a row and you would place your chip on the line where the row ends. So, you could bet on 7, 10 and 13 for example. Street bets can include 0 and 00 and when they win, they will pay you 11 to 1.

Next up is the “corner” bet where you bet on four numbers in a group. You must place your chip in the middle where the four numbers intersect. An example could be 1, 2, 4 and 5. A winning corner bet pays 8 to 1.

A “five” bet or “sucker” bet must include 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 and has a 6 to 1 payout. You can place a “line” bet which is six numbers or 2 rows of 3 numbers. The payout here is 5 to 1. The “column” bet is an outside bet where you are gambling on a number in an entire column landing. This pays out 2 to 1.

You can bet on 12 numbers with the “dozen” bet. Here you bet on the number being between 1 and 12, 13 and 24 or 25 and 36. The payout is 2 to 1. Then there is betting on either red or black which pays 1 to 1. Alternatively, you can bet on odd or even which also pays 1 to 1. The final 1 to 1 bet is low or high.
