Your aim with single deck blackjack is to make a hand that is as close to 21 as possible. You will be playing against a dealer and to win you need a superior hand. If you have over 21 with your hand then you will bust and automatically lose your bet.
The best hand to have is blackjack itself. This is exactly 21 and consists of an ace (with a value of 11) and a “ten” value card such as a 10, jack, queen or king. There are other ways to create 21 with your hand such as holding three 7s, a ten card, an 8 and a 3 and so on.
To start a game of single deck blackjack you will need to place a wager first. When you have done this, you click on the “Deal” button and you will receive two cards from the dealer. You will see these two cards right away. The dealer will receive two cards as well and one of these will be face up.
You need to assess the cards that you receive and then make a decision. If you have natural blackjack then you will automatically win or create a “push” if the dealer also has natural blackjack. In all other cases you need to make the decision to “hit” or “stand”.
When you “hit” the dealer will provide you with another card. If you “stand” then you will keep the cards that you have and the dealer will turn their cards over and if your hand is superior then you will win.
There are two ways that you can lose with single deck blackjack:
- The dealer has a superior hand to yours
- You go over 21 and “bust”
Other options with single deck blackjack are the “double down” and the “split”. With a double down you will double the bet you have made and receive a card from the dealer. If you have 11 in your hand from a 6 and a 5 for example, then a double down could win for you as you may receive a ten card (10, jack, queen or king).
If you receive two cards that are the same value such as a pair of aces you can split these and make an additional bet by creating two hands. You will win if either (or both) of your hands are superior to the hand that the dealer has.
